As of August, Tehama will now being metering the usage of Tehama desktops per minute of usage, rather than per hour. Use a desktop for a minute, and pay for just that minute. This change to our pricing model should lower the costs of Tehama desktops for most organizations by providing a more strictly usage-based pricing model.
Background on the Tehama Desktop Pricing Model
Tehama Desktops (Both Linux and Windows) have a pricing model that automatically optimizes your TCU consumption based on your usage.
- If an individual desktop is used less than 60 hours in a month, a base monthly TCU rate is applied, and then additional TCU's are consumed for hours of use.
- If an individual desktop is used more than 60 hours in a month, the desktop consumes a flat TCU rate.
This model optimizes your costs based on how each desktop is used each month, balancing the flexibility of a usage-based rate for lower or unpredictable use, with a predictable maximum rate for users who are using a desktop consistently or full-time.
In comparison, Workspaces (Tehama's classic desktop offering) has two similar modes (On-Demand vs. Always On), but requires you to choose a fixed mode on desktop creation, providing less pricing flexibility when usage is unpredictable, users onboard slower than expected, or you experience turnover.
The change we are introducing in August affects Tehama Desktops that are used less than 60 hours in a month.
Previously, usage of these desktops was metered by the hour, with each session rounded to the nearest hour. This means that a session that was 45 minutes would be metered as an hour of usage.
Now, usage of these desktops is metered by the minute. This means that a session that was 45 minutes will now be metered as exactly 45 minutes of usage.
This change represents significant cost savings for customers leveraging Tehama desktops. Tehama Linux desktops are already metered per minute of usage.
Note: Sessions on desktops based on Amazon Workspaces continue to be metered in rounded hours. This means that a session on a Workspace that was 45 minutes will continue to be metered as a full hour of usage.
